COMMUNITY AFFILIATIONS & IN-KIND SUPPORT

Our affiliations with multiple organizations, including those in the Hispanic, African and Asian communities, allow CTC’s students and parents access to resources not usually available to them.

We have made critical partnerships with local community organizations, which have pledged curriculum development, mentors, volunteers and parent/student counseling in support of CTC. You may click on the logos to visit the homepages of the organizations which support CTC.

Junior Achievement – provides pre-employment skills curriculum and a mentor/volunteer from the business community who will ensure that students get a fundamental understanding of the free enterprise system, including business and entrepreneurship. It offers economics education and the pre-employment exploration and skills needed to create a solid bridge between the classroom and the world of work. The curriculum chosen to augment CTC’s training includes: “The Economics of Staying in School”, “Success Skills”, and “Personal Economics”. Junior Achievement’s High School Program brings volunteers from the community face-to-face with students for the simplest of human interaction--sharing.

General Mills Foundation – provides mentors through the General Mills Hispanic Network in collaboration with Junior Achievement and will assign tutors who will assist with math and science education as well as provide youth leadership mentoring for students identified as “upward bound”. To this end, mentors will work with parent groups to discuss post-secondary opportunities, the importance of keeping their children in school, and the impact Hispanic women will have in the future of science and technology. This is important because Hispanics in Minnesota have a greater tendency than any other minority group to keep female students at home and not stress the importance of education. Female mentors from this and the other collaborators will serve as positive role models for this population and increase Hispanic female awareness of post-secondary options.

La Oportunidad – is a Hispanic non-profit youth mentoring organization in the Twin Cities that serves middle and high school youth. La Oportunidad provides leadership training on a weekly basis to CTC students. Last year it provided leadership training and scholarships to 22 students to participate in the Minnesota Hispanic Youth Leadership Conference in Duluth, Minnesota. As result of this participation, two students received partial scholarships to the University of Minnesota.

Other Ongoing Collaborations:
CTC’s success can be attributed in part to its ability to partner with organizations with similar missions. It utilizes the services of the local Spanish & Somali-speaking media, as well as local churches and mosques. We are also collaborating with the Minnesota Occupational Industrial Centers (OIC), trade unions, the Minneapolis Public Schools, Minneapolis Community & Technical College, Manpower (providing job placement), and the University of Minnesota’s Minority Opportunities Program. The Minnesota Center for Community Legal Education works with us to provide legal information and assistance to students in need of INS preparation for citizenship.
